While we’ve heard that sleep is vital to healthy living time and time again, a recent study led by the University of California is the first to take an objective approach to measuring people’s sleep habits. Researchers found that sleep patterns had more of an impact in predicting one’s likelihood of catching the common cold than age, income, race, education, stress level, or smoking. Compared to people who sleep more than seven hours on an average work night, those who sleep six hours or less are more than four times as likely to actually catch a cold when exposed to the virus.
