From Throwing Clubs to Chasing Birdies: My Golf Journey - insidefitnessmag.com

By: Heidi Cannon

If you'd told me 10 years ago that golf would become such a huge part of my life, I would have laughed. The first time I picked up a club, I absolutely hated it.

The Club-Throwing Beginner

My husband took me to the driving range for the very first time, and it did not go well. I had no idea what I was doing, zero understanding of golf etiquette, and after a few frustrating swings, I threw my club on the range. Safe to say, I wasn't exactly falling in love with the sport.

After that, I golfed here and there — casually, never seriously. Eventually I got a set of clubs for my birthday and took a lesson, which helped, but golf still wasn't a real focus in my life.

Palm Springs Changed Everything

Every winter, my husband and I vacation in Palm Springs, and over the years we'd golf a few times a week while we were there. Looking back, that's really where my game — especially my short game — started to improve. The problem was consistency: once I got home to Canada, I might hit the range a few times a month with zero regularity.

That changed during the winter of 2022 in Palm Springs. For the first time, I genuinely started enjoying golf, because I was finally playing consistently. The more I played, the more comfortable and confident I became. Golf, I learned, is a sport where repetition is everything — you can't expect to improve playing once a month.

In 2024, things got even more exciting. A high school friend heavily affiliated with PXG helped me land a great deal on custom clubs, and buying my first custom set felt like a real turning point. That's the year I decided to take golf seriously — committing to the range once or twice a week even through snowboard season, and playing at least one full round weekly instead of sticking to par-3 executive courses.

Am I a pro golfer? Absolutely not. But I can confidently make my way around a full-sized course and keep pace with players shooting in the mid-70s and 80s. Nobody's waiting on me to hit my shots anymore — and from where I started, that's a real accomplishment.

Where Fitness and Golf Collide

Competing in fitness has been a massive part of my life for the past 15 years. I recently switched federations and had to start from the bottom again while working toward my IFBB Pro card — a process that's been humbling and rewarding in equal measure.

Fitness and golf complement each other more than people realize. Living an active, disciplined lifestyle makes picking up new sports feel far more obtainable. Flexibility, in particular, has been huge for my swing — as a professional dancer, stretching and mobility were already part of my routine, but golf has pushed my body control and patience even further. One of the biggest things I'm working on right now is not muscling my swing, and instead trusting technique to do the work — something my coaches remind me of constantly.

Golf has taught me a lot about patience and mindset:

One bad hole doesn't ruin your round. One bad swing doesn't ruin your game. You always get another shot.

That lesson applies to life just as much as it does to golf.

Becoming the Queen of the Greens

Committing to golf in 2024 opened doors I never expected. In 2025, I became a spokesperson and sales representative for Killer Golf. Then in 2026, I attended my first PGA Show, where we officially launched our putters to the golf world.

The response was incredible — people kept stopping by the booth because they'd never seen anything quite like it. What makes Killer Golf different is our interchangeable "Artifacts" technology: customizable magnetic toppers that attach to the top of the putter, letting golfers fully personalize the look and feel of their club. It blends performance with personality in a way the industry hasn't really seen before.

Being part of something this innovative in the golf space has been exciting on its own — but I also have my own custom pink putter with interchangeable Killer Golf Artifacts. Naturally, I chose a crown topper. I call myself the Queen of the Greens.

The creativity and individuality built into the putters make golf feel more fun and expressive, especially for women who love combining sport, fashion, and personality on the course.

Chasing the Next Trophy

One thing I'd love to do next is join a women's golf league and start competing more seriously. I've always needed a goal to chase — it's what keeps me motivated to improve.

Tee Up the Right Way

Start by practicing. Go to a driving range or indoor golf facility before jumping onto a course. Learn the basics of your swing and build good habits early. Skip the practice and go straight to the course, and you're setting yourself up for frustration.

Golf is a process. It doesn't happen overnight. Consistency is everything.

Honestly, golf is a lifestyle — much like fitness. Just like competing requires proper training, nutrition, posing, and discipline, golf demands dedication, patience, and time. And one of my favorite parts is that it gives women a chance to express themselves through fashion, too — there's still so much room for growth in women's golf apparel, and I can't wait to keep designing stylish pieces for women in the sport.

I hope my story inspires you to get out on the greens, work on your game, and — most importantly — enjoy the process.

And of course: drink your greens.
