Muscle Car: Aston Martin Vantage
The Vantage name has been around since 1951 when Aston Martin first used it to name the most powerful engine option in the DB2. Shorty after, the Vantage became its own distinctive model name, appearing in the history books as the spectacular V600 twin-supercharged Le Mans car, and the much-loved V8 Vantage.
With aerodynamics directing the overall shape of the Vantage, this Aston Martin seems to be somewhat different from the usual classy James Bond mobile. For a production car, the Vantage generates a staggering amount of downforce thanks to its aggressive and sporty design. This bold new approach shows the world that Aston Martin is looking ahead into the future, rather than clinging to the past like the competition.
The aggressive, yet elegant design language continues inside the Vantage. Instead of the usual long, fluid curves that are normally found inside an Aston Martin, sharp, focused lines accentuate the more forceful nature of the car.
A 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that is made of Aston Martin’s patented new engine alloy powers the Vantage. It sits as low and as far back in the chassis as possible to allow for optimal front mid-engine configuration and perfect 50:50 weight distribution. This high-performance, high-efficiency engine returns a CO2 figure of *245g/km while still being able to produce 503hp at 6000rpm and 505ft-lb from 2000-5000rpm. Weighing in at just over 1530kg, the power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratios make squeezing the throttle a really memorable experience every single time as it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds to a maximum speed of 314km/h.
The Vantage puts down all this power and torque straight to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, and for the first time on an Aston Martin, it also features an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff). This differential is linked to the car’s electronic stability control system, so it can understand the car’s behaviour and react accordingly to direct the engine’s power to the wheel that needs it most. Unlike a conventional LSD or VLSD, it can go from fully open to 100% locked in a matter of milliseconds. At higher speeds, the E-Diff’s responsiveness enables the system to take very fine control of the car’s dynamic behaviour. It makes the Vantage feel much more composed both in straight-line stability and cornering performance, allowing the driver to enjoy the car’s capabilities to the fullest.
